Countryside Services

The Scofell countryside services team covers all aspects of managing a countryside environment. This ranges from paddock maintenance and clearing vegetation to landscaping large areas, such as creating a field or wildflower meadow out of scrub land.

We take care to understand exactly what is required before we start working for you. Then we can make sure we provide the appropriate services for your environment. We have all our own machinery and equipment, so always have the right vehicles and equipment for the task.

Countryside Services

Flailbot

Our remote-controlled flail mower enables us to clear any areas that are very overgrown, no matter how steep or uneven the terrain, or how high the weeds.

The flailbot has three different head options so can also carry out other tasks such as stump grinding, and removing shrubs and trees.

Paddock Maintenance

After horses have been kept in a paddock for a while, the vegetation needs to be encouraged to grow again.

We can offer topping, chain harrowing and rolling, and we can also spray liquid fertiliser and selective herbicides to bring the paddock back to full strength. We also create paddocks from overgrown scrub land.

Hedgerow Planting

Our countryside team is experienced in planting rural hedgerows in a variety of settings, whether it’s on a country estate, round the edge of a field or beside a nature reserve.

We often use a native six-tree hedge mix, which includes plants such as hazel, spindle and dog rose. We can also rejuvenate hedges by replacing dead or dying sections.

Hedgerow Maintenance

We can cut or trim any size, sort, length or height of hedge.

We have various vehicles and attachments: flail hedge trimmers, conventional hedge trimmers and sickle bar trimmers, mounted on a large or compact tractor as best suits the job. If the hedge has become very unruly, we’ll use our cherry picker as the first step.

Weed Control

All our operatives have spraying certificates for weed control. We use only approved chemicals: herbicides for general weed spraying and selective herbicides for spot applications of broadleaf weeds in grassy areas, which avoids killing the grass.

We can cover any area: we have a 350-litre tank and 5-metre boom sprayer for use in small fields or paddocks.

Pond & River Maintenance

We are qualified in waterside weed control, and work closely with the Environment Agency whenever we are treating riverside weeds such as Himalayan balsam.

Riverbank maintenance often involves strimming, and we are careful to do this in a way that preserves biodiversity. And we can help prevent erosion in riverbanks by planting willows.

Woodland Maintenance

Scofell arborists are skilled in all aspects of looking after woodland, from visual inspection of the trees to removing dead and diseased branches, or pruning the trees using the most suitable method.

Coppicing is a common woodland management technique, which not only extends the life of the trees but also increases woodland biodiversity.

Wildflower Meadows

Whether you have a small plot or a large field, we have the machinery to create and maintain wildflower areas.

We can strip an old paddock back to the earth and seed it as a wildflower meadow. We can also create wildflower margins as eco habitats in new developments.

Seeding

Our countryside team has created or restored many paddocks and fields, by seeding and overseeding.

To give the seeds the best chance of growing, we first rotovate and level the soil, before seeding and rolling it in. We tend to use a wildflower mix or paddock mix.

Verge Maintenance

We have a variety of tractors, mounted cutters and strimmers, so we use the best combination for the type of verge.

We have a large tractor with a mounted flail hedge trimmer, a compact tractor with a mounted hedge trimmer, and several ride-on rough-cut mowers.

Vegetation Clearance

Scofell has all the machinery and equipment necessary for clearing vegetation, however dense.

Our remote-controlled flail mower offers fast and effective vegetation control on slopes up to 50 degrees and other challenging terrains. Different head options mean that it can also be used for stump grinding, and removing shrubs and trees.
