Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Introducing biodiversity on a science campus

Case Study

Scofell is proud to be delivering grounds maintenance and biodiversity development services to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) on behalf of managing agents STFC.

We are working towards RAL becoming a flagship example of biodiversity best practice, demonstrating how people, business and wildlife can work in synergy for environmental and societal benefit.

Our work at RAL includes grass cutting, shrubs and tree maintenance, and creating annual flower displays and wildflower areas. Our teams are always on site and can call in extra capacity when required.

We also have ecologists on the Scofell team at RAL, who advise on ways to enhance biodiversity, such as wildflower meadows, eco mapping, bat surveys, bug hotels, bird boxes and tree works.

Scofell is working towards becoming a carbon-neutral company. Where possible our teams use battery-powered tools that do not rely on fossil fuels to operate and do not produce any carbon emissions. Our teams are local to RAL, which minimises travel time (thus reducing our carbon footprint) and means we can respond rapidly to any emergency.

Our GeoPal system provides real-time tracking and reporting of performance, so that STFC can receive up-to-the-minute reports at the touch of a button.

Work Completed:
  • Carried out bat surveys and eco mapping
  • Installed bug hotels and bird boxes
  • Created annual flower displays and wildflower areas
