DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER
“I began my career in teaching, but spent most of my summer holidays helping my father out with his own grounds maintenance company. It didn’t take me long to realise I actually have a real passion for the outdoors, so it was only a matter of time before I started my own business.”
My Scofell journey
“The experiences of working with my dad gave me really good, practical knowledge of tree surgery and grounds maintenance. But to give myself some formal qualifications and make sure my skills were well-rounded, I attended Merrist Wood College.”
“Not long after, Scofell Tree Surgery – as it was back then – was born.”
“We were successful from the start, but as time went on I gained more and more clients looking for grounds care and maintenance work. There was a clear demand for reliable, professional services in these areas, so I gained further qualifications in tree surgery and grounds maintenance and hired staff to cope with the increase in business.”

“Having worked on farms and estates in the south of England, I decided it was time for a change and went to Australia, where I worked on a sheep and arable unit south west of Perth. I’ve been involved with Scofell since it was founded, but joined full time in 2007.”

SCHOOLS CONTRACT MANAGER
“I first joined Scofell at the tender age of 18 back in 2007. I had a brief spell away from the company whilst I went travelling around Thailand but rejoined shortly after my return. Since then I have mainly worked on our growing number of school contracts, firstly as an operative then as a supervisor going out doing the site visits. My role now is as School Contracts Manager.”
“I have attended courses on winter sports pitch maintenance, artificial sports turf maintenance and most recently a playground inspection and maintenance course. Along with this I have various chainsaw qualifications, a spraying, trailer and M.E.W.P license.”
“I love playing football, badminton and golf. I also really enjoy reading, cooking and most importantly visiting as many country pubs as humanly possible.”

HEAD OF FINANCE
“I worked for Samsung Electronics for several years, but left the corporate world in 1999 to raise my daughters. During that time I retrained in bookkeeping and payroll and became an associate member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers. I joined Scofell Landscapes in March 2009.”
“As well as my bookkeeping qualifications, I have a Certificate in Personnel Practice from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development.”

“I started with Scofell Landscapes back in 2006. I was first promoted to supervisor, and now I’m operations manager. Before joining Scofell I worked in corporate banking. That life just wasn’t for me!”

“I spent 15 years working in television production at Meridian Broadcasting and Sky TV. I worked on the launch of the Sky Sports News channel and managed a team of staff and
freelancers. I took a career break when I had children, and joined Scofell last year.”
“When I was 18 I lived on carrots and bean sprouts for a couple of months. Believe it or not, my hands and scalp turned orange – however, I was very thin!”
A bad workman always blames his tools. But a good one uses the best tools available for the job. And at Scofell, we pride ourselves on investing both money and time in our tools. The money is spent on modern, high quality equipment. The time is spent training our people how to use it well.
We own and operate a fleet of modern tractors, mowers and other vehicles. It’s rare that we have to hire in equipment from external suppliers.
Modern equipment doesn’t just look the part. It delivers tangible benefits to our clients, too:
• Modern equipment is efficient and effective. We can do the same job in less time, using less fuel. Which means it costs you less
• Regular maintenance ensures fewer breakdowns and safe operation. We meet or exceed our deadlines, and we do so safely
• Less noise and pollution. We’ve even been experimenting with electric mowers, to bring our clients extra peace and quiet
Even our less sophisticated tools – right down to shovels and spades – are modern and in good condition. We take care of all our equipment, service it regularly and retire it in good time.
We’re safe, methodical and pride ourselves on doing things the right way. A key part of that is making sure we have insurance cover that goes above and beyond what’s legally required.
Our comprehensive public and employer’s liability insurance provides cover of up to £10m, and we can provide full documentation if you require evidence for your purchasing process.
Security and safety
Security and safety lie at the heart of Scofell. We believe a key part of our job is to ensure everything we do is done with the utmost regard for the safety of everyone and everything that could be affected by the work.
Health and safety policy
We have a clear, comprehensive health and safety policy. Regularly updated, it spells out exactly how we keep our people, your people and everyone else safe as we work.
To ensure what’s on paper gets put into practice, all our staff receive regular training and are given the power to put safety above all else. If it’s not safe, the work doesn’t happen.
Our Safe Contractor and Altius accreditations underline our commitment to safety.
Making security easy
We follow some simple principles to maintain security while we’re on your property. All our vehicles are clearly marked with our company name, and everyone who works for us wears uniform.
Every staff member is CRB checked. We are very happy to comply with your security requirements and will confirm these during our initial discussions. Once engaged on a contract, we can always be reached via a 24-hour emergency contact number.
Training, qualifications and accreditations
It may be a cliché, but our people are our biggest asset. We’re very proud of the team we’ve created, and we provide regular training to help them develop their skills and further their careers.
We have people with qualifications in key areas relating to grounds maintenance and landscaping, and we assign staff to the most appropriate clients based on these areas of expertise.
